We open up a lot of Gold Coast interiors that are only a year or two old but already look and smell tired. It's rarely neglect. It's just what this lifestyle does to a cabin without regular attention.
Why Beach Life Is So Hard on Interiors
Sunscreen is one of the worst offenders — it breaks down vinyl and leather surfaces, leaves greasy residue on seats and steering wheels, and attracts dust and sand that grinds in with every seat adjustment. Sand itself works its way into seat tracks, door pockets and carpet fibres where it acts like sandpaper every time you sit down or brush past it.
Then there's the humidity. Gold Coast humidity, combined with damp swimsuits and towels thrown on seats, creates the perfect environment for mould and odour to develop in carpet and seat foam — often before you can even smell it developing.
What a Professional Interior Detail Actually Covers
A proper interior detail goes well beyond a vacuum and a wipe-down. Here's what should be included:
- Full vacuum — including seat tracks, under seats, and boot space
- Steam cleaning — lifts embedded sand, salt and sunscreen residue out of carpet and upholstery fibres
- Leather or fabric seat treatment — cleaned and conditioned to prevent cracking or staining
- Dash, console and door trim detail — removes UV-baked grime and restores factory finish
- Odour treatment — addresses the source rather than masking it with a spray
- Glass clean, inside and out — sunscreen film on windows is a common cause of glare and reduced visibility
Worth knowing: sand and grit trapped in carpet fibres don't just look messy — over time they wear down the carpet backing and can transfer to seat foam, which is much harder (and more expensive) to fully remove once it sets in.
How Often Should You Get It Done?
For most Gold Coast households, we recommend an interior detail every 3–4 months if the car regularly sees beach trips, kids, or pets — and at least every 6 months for lighter use. If you're noticing a lingering smell, sand underfoot, or seats that feel grubby no matter how much you vacuum, that's a sign it's overdue.
