What is paint correction?

Buffing, polishing, and cutting are all terms for paint correction. It is a far cheaper way of restoring your paintwork to near-new condition compared to getting a respray. Paint correction works by carefully removing a microscopic layer of clear coat to eliminate swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, and other surface defects — leaving behind a flat, reflective finish.

It is highly labour intensive — the decontamination process alone takes roughly an hour, and the actual correction can take anywhere from 4 to 20+ hours depending on paint condition. Budget, expectations, paint type, and defect severity all contribute to the cost and the results achievable.

Three Levels of Paint Correction

Choose the level that matches your paint's current condition and your budget. Not sure? Give us a call and we'll recommend the right option after a paint inspection.
Entry level Level 1

Paint Enhancement

Uses a hybrid 3-in-1 cut, polish, and wax compound specially formulated to perform a quick cut followed by a thorough refining stage, whilst simultaneously applying a wax/sealant that greatly increases gloss. A quick and cost-effective method that provides quality results while keeping the paintwork protected. Most cost-effective option for pre-sale details.
⚠ This is not full paint correction and will not permanently remove all swirl marks — only a portion. The wax helps hide a small percentage of defects and once deteriorated, remaining defects will return.
What's included
  • Full decontamination exterior wash
  • Single pass with hybrid cut/polish compound
  • Wax/sealant applied simultaneously
  • Significant gloss improvement
  • Partial swirl and defect reduction

Most popular Level 2

Single Stage Correction

Also known as a 1-step correction. Involves one thorough pass with a DA polisher and foam pad to apply a mild cut without sacrificing gloss or clarity. The compound used allows cutting abrasives to quickly break down into finer polishing abrasives — resulting in a great reduction in swirling and other defects with a full clarity finish. Results will differ depending on original paint condition, severity of swirling, oxidation, clearcoat origin, and other factors.
What's included
  • Full decontamination exterior wash
  • Single thorough DA polisher pass
  • Hybrid cut/polish compound
  • Significant swirl and defect reduction

Dual Stage Correction

Also known as a 2-step or cut and polish. Two main stages plus sub-stages — beginning with a heavy cutting stage using wool, microfibre, or in extreme cases wet sanding. Followed by a refining or polishing stage with 1–3 sub-steps, each progressively finer depending on paint softness. Removes almost all defects depending on overall condition and remaining clearcoat. RIDS (Random Intermittent Deep Scratches) from branches, keying, or debris should be noted at inspection.
What's included
  • Full decontamination exterior wash
  • Heavy cutting stage — wool/microfibre or wet sand
  • 1–3 stage progressive refining process
  • Near-complete defect removal
  • Paint inspection & RIDS assessment included

Common questions

Paint correction — what you need to know

Answers to the most common questions about paint correction and cut and polish on the Gold Coast.
It depends on the severity of defects and your budget. If you're preparing for a sale and want a quick gloss improvement, Paint Enhancement is the most cost-effective option. If you have noticeable swirl marks and want a significant reduction, Single Stage is the right choice. If your paint is heavily defected, oxidised, or you want the closest to perfect result possible, Dual Stage is the way to go. We recommend a paint inspection before committing — give us a call to discuss.
Not necessarily — it depends on the depth of the scratch. Paint correction removes defects that sit within the clear coat layer. Scratches that have penetrated through to the base coat or primer cannot be corrected by polishing and would require touch-up paint or a respray. We assess each vehicle individually and will be upfront about what's achievable before we start.
The correction itself is permanent — once a defect is polished out, it's gone. However, your paint will continue to accumulate new swirls and defects over time through washing, environmental exposure, and general use. Following correction with a ceramic coating significantly extends the results by adding a hard, protective layer over the paintwork. We strongly recommend combining paint correction with our ceramic coating service.
Yes — and there's no better time to apply a ceramic coating than immediately after correction. The paint is in its cleanest, most defect-free state, meaning the coating bonds directly to a perfect surface and locks in those results long-term. Applying a coating without correcting first just seals in the defects. Check out our Ceramic Coating page for more details.
Generally yes, but the approach varies significantly depending on the paint system. Soft paints (common on many European and American vehicles) correct easily but also scratch more easily. Hard paints (common on Japanese vehicles) resist scratching well but require more aggressive compounds to correct. We assess paint hardness before selecting products and machine settings to ensure we achieve the best result without removing more clear coat than necessary.
